Today at Lawn Edgers, we’re going to look at Power Trim machines.

People do not want to spend hours in mowing their lawns with old tools and equipment. Power Trim Lawn Edger can foot their bill as this gasoline-powered device does the job quickly and has great fuel efficiency.

Power Trim Edger comes in nine different models. Its power capacity ranges from 118 CC to 148 CC. Power Trim Yard Edger also comes in different designs and sizes to cater to different shapes and sizes of lawns.

Everyone knows the Troy-Bilt name, so we here at Lawn Edgers had to see what kind of Troy-Bilt edgers are available now. There are two basic models to choose from: the 554E and the TB515. The 554E is the larger of the two Troy-Bilt edgers while the TB515 is optimistically called a “portable.”

Both are 3-wheeled, self-supporting models that don’t require the operator to carry them. That’s where the similarities end, however. These Troy-Bilt lawn edger models are very different machines.

The larger 554E uses a strong, triple-blade cutting edge with a 3-position bevel, adjustable cutting depth, etc. It’s powered by a Troy-Bilt gas edger 158cc Briggs & Stratton engine and has a 2 year limited warranty on the unit. This is a strong, useful, hard-working tool.

The smaller TB515 is lighter and much less powerful than the 554E, but this Troy-Bilt sidewalk edger is no less for it. It’s made for lighter jobs on smaller properties with fewer chores. It’s a 3-wheeled, stand-alone design so the user doesn’t need to carry it. It’s lighter to push and easier to lift into a shed or pickup truck. It uses a 29cc, 4-cycle engine to power a dual-tip blade.

Depending on your needs, either model of Troy-Bilt gas edger will deliver solid performance. Most complaints center around the older 554L766 model, which had some engine reliability issues. That Briggs & Stratton Quattro engine is an issue on any machine it’s attached to.

These two models of Troy-Bilt edgers are definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a new lawn maintenance tool.

Two models of Tanaka edgers will catch your eye, depending on your needs: the TLE-600 and the TPE-260PF. Both Tanaka lawn edger models are true edgers (not trimmers), but one is a walk-behind and the other is a stick-type carried model. We here at Lawn Edgers looked at both.

The larger TLE-600 is a Tanaka yard edger with a 3-wheeled design on a stable platform. The 50cc, 2.5hp engine gives this Tanaka gas edger plenty of power. The only customer complaint seems to center around the handlebars, which have a limited height adjustment. Otherwise, it is reported to run very well, have a strong performance, and be a good home owner’s Tanaka sidewalk edger.

While this model is heavy, it’s self-supporting, so the user doesn’t need to lift or move it. It’s shaft-driven blade is a big step up from most belt and chain-drive models and it includes a 2-year commercial-use warranty, a 3-year consumer use warranty, and a 1-year rental warranty. So Tanaka definitely stands behind this Tanaka gas edger.

The more traditional, lighter-duty TPE-260PF Tanaka edgers are about 14 pounds with a straight shaft. The guide wheel keeps the 8 inch blade on track with an adjustable cutting depth down to 3 inches. This Tanaka lawn edger is gas powered at 25cc (1.3hp) and has a warranty matching the larger model above.

Most small and medium-sized property owners will find the Tanaka yard edger TPE-260PF model to be the lower-cost choice while those with larger properties or who work commercially with their edger will likely prefer the larger TLE-600 Tanaka sidewalk edger.

There are three models of Sears Craftsman edgers to choose from, depending on your needs. The 12 Amp Sears Craftsman electric edger is the lightest of the bunch. The Sears Craftsman gas edgers include the 29cc 3-wheeled and the heavier duty 5.0 ft-lbs 500 Series B&S model Sears Craftsman lawn edger. We’ll look at all three in this Lawn Edger review.

The 12A Sears Craftsman electric edger is a popular model in 3-wheeled form. It’s relatively easy to use, light weight, and doesn’t require the user to carry it. These are not made in America, however, and many have had problems with the motor dying, the cords being unreliable, and clogging of the blade guard with grass and debris. Works very well in dry climates.

The 29cc is heavier (24 pounds), but is a 3-wheeled, stand-alone model that does not require the operator to lift it. This Sears Craftsman gas edger has a 9 inch blade with an adjustable depth of up to 2-1/4 inches. With the Craftsman name behind it, this edger should be great, but many owners are complaining about its weak build and cut. Luckily, the 5.0 is not much more expensive.

The Sears Craftsman lawn edger 5.0 Briggs and Stratton 500 unit is much heavier than the other two models, but is also much more powerful. The blade can be beveled, has a cut depth of up to 2-1/2 inches and a very stable 3-wheeled platform. It’s 500 series, 158cc engine puts out 5.0 ft-lbs of torque. Owners seem almost universally satisfied with this one.

This strong Sears Craftsman yard edger does require some thought during assembly (namely, don’t put the whole bottle of oil that comes with it into the oil pan), which is the root of most people’s problems with it. The powerful Sears Craftsman edgers in this model, though, will meet nearly everyone’s needs for moderate-sized lawns and patios.

Those who are serious about their lawn edges and who prefer power and performance are often drawn to the McLane edgers. These offer stability, relative ease of use (no carrying), power, and reliable performance. We here at Lawn Edgers knew that we couldn’t talk about edgers for long without looking at McLane lawn edger models.

There are several models to choose from, though all are based on the same platform. The difference between one McLane yard edger and the next is usually engine accessories. They all feature the same 3.5hp Briggs & Stratton engine or the Honda 4hp engine. All McLane sidewalk edger models have either 7 or 8 inch wheels (either 3 or 4).

A single lever controls the blade clutch and depth of cut. The famous McLane gas edger steel frame and dual bearings on the wheels makes for stable and easy use. Variable speed throttle controls, a large blade, and enclosed pulleys keep it running reliably, with power.

Because they sit entirely on the ground and are controlled through the handles like a lawn mower or tiller, the McLane edgers are popular amongst those who wish to care for their own lawn, but do not wish to carry a 10-15 pound tool around to do so.

McLane edgers are made in the USA (California), have extra blades in the box, and are known for their reliability.

Popular amongst home owners, Kawasaki edgers come in both true edger and trimmer models. The KEL27B is a true Kawasaki lawn edger and we here at Lawn Edger wanted to take a look at it for you.

The KEL27B is a Kawasaki gas edger is a straight-shaft edger with a balance/guide wheel, a 26.3cc engine, and weighs under 12 pounds with the blade. It’s about 69 inches long from tip to blade and this Kawasaki yard edger is popular both for its price and usability.

If you live in California, your model for this Kawasaki sidewalk edger is KEL27BC, due to California’s small engine emissions requirements. This model is a little less powerful (in use) than the regular model the rest of the nation sees, but this doesn’t diminish its capability too much for most homeowners.

For those who prefer a Kawasaki electric edger, you’ll need to look at string and fixed-blade trimmer models instead. Most people prefer the gas-powered Kawasaki edgers, however, because of the superior power they’re capable of delivering. Of these, the KGT27A is likely the most popular model.

The Kawasaki yard edger KGT27A (string trimmer) is only about 10 pounds in weight, but delivers impressive power in 1.6hp of output from the Kawasaki gas edger engine. Both the drive shaft and ignition module have a lifetime warranty from Kawasaki, but this Kawasaki yard edger is not available in California.

Whatever your needs, it’s likely there’s a Kawasaki lawn edger or string trimmer to match them. For many, these are the tools of choice.

To sum up the world of Husqvarna edgers, I think this phrase captures it all: “Expensive, but totally worth it.” We here at Lawn Edger understand that you want the best tools for the job. For a lot of people, Husqvarna provides the best tools.

There are five Husqvarna lawn edger and trimmer models to choose from for the home owner. For a dedicated Husqvarna yard edger, the 325e-X is likely the model of choice. Not really a home owner’s model, this is a professional Husqvarna sidewalk edger. It cuts a depth from as shallow as one inch all the way down to four inches.

The 325e-X is a Husqvarna gas edger, but it’s several decibels quieter than standard gas edger models. It also includes a 2-year warranty.

For lower-cost, homeowner use (rather than professional), Husqvarna yard edger models aren’t available, though four models of trimmer are. These are in two basic varieties: the 128 series and the 125C.

All four are Husqvarna gas edger models in 28cc. Their specs are basically the same throughout with the difference being in ergonomic control: two models are straight-shaft and two are curved for upright use. The 128L and 128LDx models of Husqvarna sidewalk edger have drive gears for better gearing power to the head.

For most, the choice of Husqvarna edgers will come down to need. The size of your property, how often you’ll use the tool, and what situations you’ll need it for are the final deciders here.

If a Husqvarna lawn edger is on your list, though, you’re probably someone who prefers quality tools for the job.

Probably the most well-known of the Black & Decker edgers is the Edge Hog 2-in-1 (model LE750). This Black & Decker lawn edger has a lot of power and flexibility, aimed at the single task of creating perfect edges along your lawn’s borders. We here at Lawn Edger took a look at them to see what they offer.

This model is a Black & Decker electric lawn edger and, to my knowledge, there is no Black & Decker gas edger. This makes it extremely quiet and, for the money, one of the better choices on the market right now according to most testing groups.

This Black & Decker sidewalk edger is a 3-wheeled design with a blade rotating counter-clockwise (back-to-front, right side) so debris are thrown away from the operator. The blade is hardened steel and adjustable to 1-1/2 inches to match your needs.

It includes a built-in extension cord with reel to keep it off the ground as much as possible and the Black & Decker yard edger is light and maneuverable. Many user comments around the Web state that it’s better than most gas models and it comes with an impressive 2-year warranty.

For more versatility, several Black & Decker lawn edgers and string trimmers are available as well. Most of the trimmers are gas powered, but there is a good mix of electric ones as well. There are even cordless Black & Decker edgers (trimmers). Most receive good reviews and are worth looking at if you’re in the market for this.
